CHHA, Cal Expo approve agreement
The California Harness Horsesmen's Association and Cal Expo Board of Directors have both approved an agreement between the two parties that will extend harness racing at Cal Expo until December 21, 2013, plus two one-year options to be mutually agreed upon that would extend the agreement further until December 19, 2015.
The agreement includes a minimum of 140 racing days per year, investment amounts from Cal Expo to the purse pool to cover specific amounts of overpayments that may occur in any given racing year, an immediate 15 percent purse increase, early and/or late closers to be contested in the Spring of each year, and an investment of approximately $65,000 in funds previously directed to Cal Expo from CHHA that will be directed to the horsemen in 2010.
"Both parties are pleased to have the issue of negotiating the first multiyear agreement behind them," said Director of Racing Dave Elliott. "We are excited about the future of harness racing at Cal Expo and look forward to providing the best program possible for the fans and the horsemen. We're hopeful the racing product continues to attain successes with the aid of the horsemen's participation and innovative concepts."
